Home Interior Trend: The Pineapple
This curious looking fruit has been popping up in various forms in the home, from pineapple fabric prints and china patterns to, everyone’s favourite, the decorative golden pineapple, adorning the sideboards and dining tables of those most keen on the latest interior trends. What is it about this spiky, half-plant, half-fruit-looking object that catches our eye so much?
The cheerful, interesting shape of the pineapple looks here to stay for 2018, having been a popular motif used by interior designers throughout the last year. The design is particularly popular for spring/summer interior looks, with the vibrant yellow and green colours lending well to a fresh and tropical colour palette.
The pineapple as decoration is not new, however, traditionally used as a symbol of wealth by early American Colonists who imported them from the Caribbean, and served guests the exotic fruit to eat or used them as bountiful table decorations. The associations of power, wealth and hospitality associated with the pineapple shape meant it was used by architects, artisans and craftsmen, sculpting pineapples into the architecture of buildings, on gateposts and used in fabrics and furniture. We have a brilliant example of this on our doorstep in Scotland, with the bizarre and beautiful Dunmore Pineapple House near Falkirk, dating back to 1761 and which visitors can now book to stay for a holiday let.
The golden, shimmering metallic pineapple, weather used in decorative mirrors, bathroom accessories or the iconic decorative ornament, is a nod to the historical use of the pineapple as a signifier of wealth, and adds a colonial, classic feel to the home when used sparingly alongside crisp white fabrics and natural materials such as bamboo and rattan. Stores such as Oliver Bonas, H&M’s home department, Urban Outfitters and Ikea have all included the pineapple in their recent collections, leading the way for this trend and making it affordable for many to buy-into. The pineapple fits well with the ‘tropic-cool’ interior fashion we’ve seen recently too, incorporating lots of indoor plants, palm and cheese plant prints, vibrant greens, tropical birds and exotic flowers that add a flamboyant touch to fabrics, wallpapers and ceramics.
Something eye-catching like a golden pineapple is also easily shared on social media, such as Instagram and Pinterest, fuelling a trend that people can easily buy into and incorporate into their own homes. These types of accessories are affordable and fun, and great way for those within the 20-40 age bracket to update their interiors, who are perhaps renting and not able to make big decorative changes. Incorporating trendy accessories and decorative pieces instead, helps to keep living spaces stylish and on-trend, with these pieces being easily swapped in for new styles when the fashion or season changes.
Until the next big trend, hooray for the pineapple – prickly, proud and the perfect decorative touch for your home in 2018.
