A Brand New Look for Byres Road!

One of Glasgow’s most famous streets and just around the corner from our office, Byres Road is to be completely rejuvenated to create a more attractive, enjoyable and safer environment for all who live, shop and work there.

The primary aim of the regeneration project is to prioritise walking and cycling, and to improve the ease of access for the less mobile. The design work has been done, and you can see artists impressions of how the new and improved Byres Road will look here.

The £9million budget for funding these improvements will come from the £1.13billion Glasgow City Region City Deal. The consultation is currently running up until 27 June, so if you have any thoughts on the proposed changes, make sure you have your say.

Improving facilities for pedestrians and cyclists

It was felt that the balance of users needed to be readdressed to provide a greater provision for cyclists and pedestrians because:

40% of shoppers live or walk 10 minutes away from Byres Road.

At peak-times there are around 3,500 people per hour using the pavements on Byres Road.

There are less than 1,000 car parking space yet less than 10% of shoppers currently park on Byres Road.

69% of shoppers arrive by cycling, walking or public transport.

In the summer those arriving by public transport account for 41% of the monthly retail spend, rising to 67% during term time. Those arriving car account for just 36% and just 10% respectively.

Proposed changes to Byres Road

The West End is a vibrant commercial, shopping and residential area with a Bohemian atmosphere and these changes will further enhance the visitor experience. The proposed changes include:

Widened footways.

Crossings to give pedestrians priority at junctions.

Reducing street clutter.

Making attractive corners where people can stop and rest.

Creating smooth, level surfaces.

Introducing a 20mph speed limit.

Reducing on-street parking to create additional additional space for pedestrians and cyclists, whilst retaining a number of on-street parking bays.

Increasing the greenery by adding trees and planters.

Improving the lighting to improve security.

Introducing cycle lanes including a contraflow lane and providing a continuous route between Western Road and Partick Cross.

Construction work on this highly anticipated regeneration project will begin in late 2018.
