Like everything there are pros and cons to both natural and synthetic flooring. However, if you’re looking for new flooring that is both sustainable and environmentally there are several options available.

You may be sceptical about many aspects of the global warming crisis, but if one thing is for certain, it’s that investing in natural flooring contributes to the solution. By choosing a natural product, it will be long lasting (wood flooring lasts generations) it won’t contribute to global warming and can be good for your health.

Wood flooring

Wood flooring is not only sustainable, it looks incredible too. Bamboo

Bamboo is the fastest growing plant on the planet, and that’s why it’s also the most sustainable flooring available. It looks beautiful, is more hardwearing than any hardwood flooring and an be stained so it’s available in a range of tones and colours.

Sisal

Sisal derives from the leaf of the Agave Sisalana plant and is one of the most popular natural flooring choices; it’s available in a range of styles, colours, and designs. It can be fitted as a wall-to-wall carpet or as a rug. It’s extremely hardwearing and can be woven into various carpet styles.

Coir

Taken from the husks of coconuts, Coir is strong, durable and textured. It can be fitted or made into a rug. Like Sisal, it’s not recommended that this product is fitted in a bathroom or kitchen as liquid can damage the material.

Seagrass

Both strong and resistant, Seagrass is known for baskets and hats but also makes an ideal flooring product. It’s grown in paddy fields, and can be fitted wall-to-wall or as a rug.

Jute

Jute is a long, soft, shiny fibre and can be used to make hessian and floor coverings. It’s extremely soft to touch yet is very strong and durable. Again, it can be fitted as a wall-to-wall carpet or rug.

Cork

Cork flooring is produced from the outer bark of the cork tree and is highly beneficial as a floor covering as the tree isn’t felled or removed when the cork is being harvested. Cork trees can live up to 200 years and along with Bamboo is one of the most environmentally friendly flooring options.
