Moving to Glasgow? Here’s Your Essential Guide
Glasgow is the largest urban area in Scotland. The city is bursting with culture, events, sporting events, entertainment, world-class shopping, incredible restaurants, history, amazing people and beautiful homes.
If Glasgow is a place that you’d like to call home, here’s our guide to Scotland’s Second City!
Glasgow regions
The city of Glasgow is divided into several regions: City Centre, North Glasgow, Southside, East End and West End. Each area has its own atmosphere from the family-friendly pockets of the Southside with exceptional schooling and historical parks and cultural attractions to the cool boutiques, beautiful architecture and incredible bar and restaurant scene of the West End. Whatever your life stage and budget – buying for the first time, upsizing for your growing family or retiring – everyone in Glasgow is catered for.
From classic red sandstone tenements and modern townhouses to bungalows, semis and detached villas we can help you find the right property for you.
Transport
Glasgow is served by the M8 which takes you straight into Edinburgh in under an hour. The M74 and M6 are also within easy reach, as is the A82 towards Loch Lomond. There are also two major rail stations – Glasgow Central and Glasgow Queen Street, with direct links to London and Edinburgh.
The city also has its own subway system which circulates the city with trains every four minutes at peak times. It runs from the West End, parallel to the River Clyde and back into the city centre.
Glasgow Airport is on the west side of Glasgow just 20 minutes from the centre. Glasgow Prestwick Airport is only 45 minutes away on the M77. From here you can reach all European destinations.
Finding the right area
The West End of Glasgow previously won the Academy of Urbanism’s ‘Best Neighbourhood Award’ and is widely considered to be among the most desirable areas of Glasgow. If you would like to live in a classic sandstone terrace the Hillhead district has beautiful tenement buildings. Dowanhill is popular with professionals and has plenty of detached family homes with gardens. Victoria Circus has some of the grandest stone-built buildings in the area.
If you want to live close to the airport you could consider the Southside. Here you will find plenty of new, modern homes and traditional detached villas suitable for growing families. Pollokshields was one of the first Victorian garden suburbs and has plenty of green spaces. Crossmyloof and Strathbungo are also worth considering.
If you want to live in the heart of the City Centre, you could consider Merchant City’s Victorian housing and Garnethill’s bohemian neighbourhoods.
